Hello Dreamwidth
I'm Lyric Wolf, and welcome to my shiny new blog
I'm a 30 year old queer, non-binary, neurodivergent (autistic and adhd) theatre kid who loves crafting, creative writing, dancing, history and nearly always has their nose in a book.
I love musicals. I think the world would be much better if people randomly burst into song and dance routines. My current favourites are Rent and Six, Phantom and Joseph, but if I listed all the musicals I love we'd be here forever.
It's not just musical theatre though - I always have music playing. I am a little obsessed with Taylor Swift, Harry Styles and One Direction.
I'm a history nerd. I have a degree in Creative Writing and history, and my history passion is The Tudors.
I also love learning about ancient history, classical civilisations and mythology - mostly Greek & Roman, with some Arthurian right now.
I love to dance. I'm trained in ballet and ballroom, but in general moving to music feels good.
Making things makes me happy. Everything from writing poetry and fanfiction, to knitting and crochet, to cooking and baking. I love trying new things and seeing what sticks.
Science-fiction has been my favourite tv/movie genre since I was a child and I grew up on a healthy diet of Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who and Stargate.
I struggle with my mental health and find that mindfulness and gratitude practices really help me. I try to find the joy in the every day and always aim towards happiness.
I've recently bought my first home, moved out of living in shared accommodation for the first time in well over a decade and honestly, it's a little lonely. I remember online fandom and blogging spaces in my mid-late teens to have been a really fun, friendly, interconnected space, so I'm hoping to rediscover that kind of vibe.
Childhood favourite books
7/11/23 18:12I happily describe myself as always having my nose in a book - mostly because it's true. I always have at least one physical book, and probably my Kindle with me at any given time. My local library know me by name, are always ready to chat about and recommend books to me (and crafting too!).
Neither of my parents are big readers, but they understood the importance of it for me as a child and I have fond memories of my dad taking me to the library every Saturday. I don't remember learning to read - I just remember being able to read. I remember being read bedtime stories and following along. I remember when I took over reading the books to my parents.
As a child I loved books like
The Gruffalo
Richard Scarrey books
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Funnybones
Pretty much anything by Janet & Allan Ahlberg
As I got older
Goosebumps
Animorphs
Choose Your Own Adventure
Harry Potter
Percy Jackson
Fear Street
Then into my late teens and early twenties, I was all about the sci-fi
1984
Dune
Brave New World
Foundation
The Time Machine
Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy
I've recently finished reading
Best British Short Stories 2021
The Last Word: Tales from the Tip of the Mother Tongue
The Titan's Curse
And I've just started Gentleman Jack: A Biography of Anne Lister, Regency Landowner, Seducer and Secret Diarist

New crafting kits
6/11/23 18:03I picked up a couple of new crafting kits during my lunchbreak today: some cross-stich, some embroidery, an amigurumi, diamond dots and mosaic. All things I've been wanting to try for ages.
I had fun wandering through Hobbycraft, looking at all the shiny new things
I had some wonderful dopamine hits picking up the kits, paying for them
Another dopamine hit getting them home and opening them
And now I'm frozen with indecision and fear. I don't know how to do these things. What if I can't do them? I'm no good at not being able to do things - even though I know the only way to get better is to suck, to keep doing it and improve
ARGH!

It's been another one of those days - although it seems like far too many of them are those days and sometimes I wonder if they are the default, and the good days are the ones that are actually other. But this came across my instagram feed and is a really good reminder that I thought was worth sharing:

4/11/23 17:47I just signed up for beginner tap classes. I checked, to make sure it's not a kids class but it's not, it's an all ages, mostly adult, beginner tap dance class for all abilities.
Tap is one of those things I've always wanted to try, I love watching it, so I'm very excited. Very very nervous but hopefully everyone will be nice!

3/11/23 17:38Music is one of those things that makes me very happy. I also use it to stim, and am the kind of person that can leave the same song on repeat all day. And lately it's been Six: The Musical. By lately, I mean most of the year.
So I thought I'd share some of that music with you, a little dose of happiness for a cold, wet, stormy, Saturday night:

I always try and keep the mindset that there is always something to be thankful for. Some days, especially with everything that's going on in the world, it's hard... and today has been one of those days.
The one bright point in today was getting home from work to discover I'd had a delivery of tea: some gingerbread sticky chai, some salted caramel sticky chai and some mulled cider apple tea.
Curling up with a gingerbread sticky chai, a mince pie and a book will hopefully improve the evening

November Plans
1/11/23 16:59I'm trying to take some baby steps out of my comfort zone and not get to a stage where I'm scared to leave the house. It's very very easy to not walk out of the front door, but I don't want to end up a prisoner in here, no matter how comfortable it is. I also want to take some more steps towards making this place the comfy, cozy, hygge space of my dreams
So I've put together a list of things I can do in November, both in and out of the house, to help me with this which, in no particular order looks like:
I also have a little list of things I want to aim to cook/bake during the month:
Do you have a November bucket list? Is there anything that seems glaringly obvious missing from mine
So I've put together a list of things I can do in November, both in and out of the house, to help me with this which, in no particular order looks like:
- Start Christmas Shopping - get friends amazon/etsy lists, explore small businesses online and in town to find unique/fun/exciting presents.
- Put up fairy lights - SAD is a thing and the long, dark evenings/nights bring me down. I love to have a variety of different lighting options in my living spaces, and have ordered myself some bumper packs of fairy lights for my living room, my bedroom and my home office/study/book/chill room.
- Go to a bonfire/fireworks display
- A nice walk in the park, enjoying the colours of the season
- Invite friends over for a boardgames night
- Knit a cozy jumper or cardigan
- Go to the Christmas lights switch on
I also have a little list of things I want to aim to cook/bake during the month:
- Pumpkin pie
- Soups
- Stews
- Hot apple cider
- Apple crumble & custard
- Roast chicken & all the trimmings
